Association between oral health behaviors and hemoglobin A1c in type 2 diabetic patients

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the association between oral health behaviors and hemoglobin A1c in type 2 diabetic patients.

Methods: The subjects of this study were 150 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who went to the internal and family medicine departments of clinics from June to October, 2007. This study used the questionnaire and NYCOCARD¨Þ READER¥± to quantify hemoglobin A1c. The data was analyzed with t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program.

Results: 16.7% of subjects has scaling experience during the past year, each of 7.3%, 5.3% reported receiving periodic dental examination and periodic scaling. And less than one-tenth(8.6%) reported using dental floss silk. The most common self-reported symptoms were swelling and bleeding of the gum(48.0%). These results show that Hemoglobin A1c were related to frequency of visiting medical institutions for diabetic treatment, blood glucose monitoring, physical exercise, diet control, time passed from visiting dental institutions, periodic scaling.

Conclusions: Scaling and visits to dental institutions were found to be closely related with Hemoglobin Alc. Therefore, the importance of periodic scaling, dental checkups and daily oral self-care includes tooth brushing, dental floss silk are emphasized among people with diabetes by dental and other health care professionals.
